Hacienda Tijax Nature Reserve
Hacienda Tijax is a living prove of the difference between just talking about ecology, and actually walking the walk for conservation.
With
220 acres of fully reforested, productive forest (Rubber and
Teak) 40 acres of primary, "old Growth" Very Humid Tropical
Forest And 80 acres more in various stages of planting we
can show the visitor all the different aspects of Forest Management
and conservation. 3 kilometers of roads and trails both through the Tropical
Forest as well as the Rubber Plantation.
More than 70 species of birds can be seen on a common day at Tijax, this makes of Tijax a perfect place for birdwatchers and nature lovers.
Great
views of buttressed trees with many epiphytes and vines along
the creekes where turtles and kingfishers are a common sight.
In season iguanas and otters are also present.
Occasionally even a small crocodile could be found swimming at the swamp.
The next section is
a brief climb to the entrance of our very own reserve
area where a fully canopied trails wind through thick jungle.
Palms
and Heliconias are common in the undergrowth,
Trees are lush and covered in vines.
You will see some of the common hardwoods such as Rosewood,
Chicozapote, Chichipate and Naranjo
and some trees that have multiple uses such as the
Chico (Chewing gum tree) the Sangre (Red dye) and the Ramon
(food and fodder), you will see the Vanilla orchid and many
fossil rocks and corals as the hill was once an island surrounded
by the sea.
Upon
exiting the forest we enter the Rubber Plantation.
On hot days we recommend a visit to the pool on the return
trip. The pool
is a small but very cool, spring water rock pool just ten
minutes away from the Jungle Lodge, a nice refreshing way
to end the excursion.
